Public chair masterclasses

Public Chairs’ Forum and the Institute for Government have partnered together to host a series of masterclasses for new and aspiring public body chairs.

Hosted jointly by PCF and Institute for Government (IfG), the New Public Body Chair Masterclasses are a series of three masterclasses aimed at supporting new and prospective public chairs as they tackle this unique role. Chairs have described how challenging the first year in the role can be, as they navigate a new set of responsibilities and powers that are often poorly defined.

The purpose of the series is to:

  • Explain the governmental and public body landscape
  • Examine the relationship between public bodies and sponsoring departments
  • Identify and explore key stakeholder relationships
  • Reflect on the public chair role and discuss challenges and experiences with others

The masterclasses are specifically designed for:

  • Public body chairs in their first 18 months of appointment
  • Aspiring public chairs, likely to be highly experienced non-executive directors or private sector Chairs.

Session information:

  • Session one: The public chair in government – Tuesday 13 October 2026, 9:30-17:00; networking dinner, 17:15-19:30
  • Session two: Building relationships and excelling as a leader – Wednesday 14 October, 9:30-16:15

Participants are required to attend in person for both sessions. Please note that lunch is provided on both days, as is the networking dinner on 13 October. The masterclasses will take place at:
